How to Replace a Dishwasher’s Upper Spray Arm: Easy DIY Guide | SBW#77

Is your dishwasher’s upper rack not cleaning dishes as effectively as before? Are you noticing a decrease in spray performance from the dishwasher arm? It might be time to consider a replacement. Discover the affordable and simple steps I took to replace my dishwasher’s upper spray arm, restoring its optimal functionality.

My dishwasher recently exhibited a decline in its ability to clean dishes on the upper rack. Curious about the issue, I inspected the appliance and made a significant discovery. The connection tube of the upper spray arm had deteriorated completely, creating a substantial gap that likely led to water wastage.

My dishwasher recently exhibited a decline in its ability to clean dishes on the upper rack. Curious about the issue, I inspected the appliance and made a significant discovery. The connection tube of the upper spray arm had deteriorated completely, creating a substantial gap that likely led to water wastage.

Researching the specific part for my Kenmore dishwasher, I found that it was actually a rebranded Whirlpool component. This cross-compatibility is common due to shared manufacturing practices between brands like Kenmore and Whirlpool.

After acquiring the replacement part from Amazon, I began the process of installation. Upon comparing the new and old parts, I found that the new version featured a sturdier plastic control arm tube in place of the previous rubber one.

Tools needed for this straightforward procedure included only a #2 Philips screwdriver. I started by unscrewing the locking screw on the control arm’s top bracket, allowing it to detach from the upper rack.

Gently removing the bracket and then the bottom screw that connected it to the spray arm assembly, I proceeded to install the new spray arm. The assembly sequence involved placing the new plastic bushing atop the sprayer, followed by the new spray arm, creating the order: bracket > spray arm > bushing > bracket. Reattaching the bottom screw secured the entire assembly, with attention paid to proper bracket alignment.

The old hanger on the dishwasher’s upper rack was replaced with a new one to match the new spray arm. These hangers conveniently snap on and off the rack.

Guiding the spray arm through the hanger, I attached the bracket that holds the front part of the assembly onto the basket. Securing the locking screw and adjusting its tightness ensured a slight range of motion for proper alignment with the water inlet tube on the dishwasher wall.

Several repetitions of sliding the upper rack in and out ensured that everything was aligned and in perfect working condition.

Completing these steps reinstated the dishwasher’s full functionality, providing a cost-effective solution to the diminished cleaning performance of the upper rack.
